Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)

Many organisations and community groups want to create meaningful change but often find themselves focusing on problems and gaps. Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) offers a different approach by focusing on the strengths and resources that already exist within communities.

Rather than starting with needs, ABCD helps people recognise and mobilise the skills, relationships, and knowledge already present to create positive and sustainable change.

What Participants Will Learn

Participants will explore:

  • The philosophy and principles of Asset-Based Community Development
  • How to identify community assets such as skills, relationships, knowledge, and local resources
  • Techniques for mapping community strengths
  • How to strengthen relationships and partnerships within communities
  • Ways communities can mobilise their existing resources to create change

Practical Activities

Participants will take part in:

  • Community asset mapping
  • Exploring case studies and real-life examples
  • Using a Co-production Action Planning tool to apply ABCD principles to real situations

Participants will leave with practical ideas for strengthening communities by building on what is already strong.
